On the afternoon of January 16, staff of the Emergency Department of Shenzhen Samii Medical Center (The Fourth People's Hospital of Shenzhen) (SSMC) took their life-saving "first-aid kits" to Shenzhen Pingshan Feicui Kindergarten, ready to impart "self-rescue and mutual rescue" skills to the school's teachers so as to benefit more children and families.

The trainer of this session was SUN Dayong, Head of the Emergency Department of SSMC. He has rich clinical experience in pre-hospital and in-hospital first aid for various diseases of Internal Medicine.

During the training, Mr. SUN mainly explained three first-aid skills: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of AEDs, and the Heimlich maneuver. "All deaths stem from the cessation of the heartbeat!" "Within one minute after a heart attack, one can be brought back to life; within four minutes, brain death can develop into a vegetative state, and after eight minutes, one can be basically declared biologically dead. Hence, for CPR, time is life." Mr. SUN's explanations were vivid and practical, thoroughly enlightening the audience, who said they were greatly inspired.

Only by combining theory with practice can knowledge be truly internalized. During the hands-on practice session, the teachers of Feicui Kindergarten exhibited enthusiasm and vigor. From identifying collapse on the ground to initiating CPR and using the AED, they executed every step with precision. Through repeated practice, they were determined to ensure all rescue measures were performed correctly and effectively. "After learning first-aid skills, you should dare to step forward and use an AED to save lives in case of danger in the future!" Mr. SUN's encouragement greatly motivated the audience.

It's worth noting that more than 20,000 AEDs have been placed in public spaces across Shenzhen, including subway stations, train stations, airports, schools, and sports venues. This widespread distribution makes ithighly convenient and practical for individuals to acquire the skills needed to operate an AED and potentially save lives through resuscitation efforts!

"What if someone is choking?" Mr. SUN was keenly aware of the heightened risk of choking incidents among kindergarten-aged children. With this in mind, he kindly shared the Heimlich maneuver. This life-saving technique can swiftly dislodge foreign objects obstructing the airway, potentially saving young lives teetering on the edge of peril.

"After mastering these skills, not only can we protect ourselves and others, but we can also teach them to children, empowering them with the ability to rescue themselves and others and enhancing their awareness of health", commented the teachers from Feicui Kindergarten, who expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Mr. SUN after the training session. This successful session has greatly boosted the confidence of the Emergency Department of SSMC. Moving forward, SSMC will continue to intensify its efforts in disseminating first-aid skills, striving to sow the seeds of health in wider  communities.
