During the press conference, Prof. Madjid Samii engaged with media outlets via a video link. Reminiscing about his longstanding connections with China spanning over two decades, he fondly recounted his collaboration with the Capital Medical University in Beijing to establish the China International Neuroscience Institute (China-INI), a hub for expertise training and cooperation. This collaborative endeavor not only benefited Beijing but also significantly advanced neurosurgery across the whole China. Prof. Madjid Samii recalled the humble beginnings of China-INI, starting with only 8 colleagues at the China-INI where they were only able to perform 2 to 3 surgeries a day in their early years. Now the institution boasts more than a hundred experts performing 40 to 50 surgeries daily, which is delight to him.

Prof. Madjid Samii believes that China's development holds boundless possibilities and he is confident in the country’s medical future. Following his success in Beijing, he was invited to Shenzhen, where he replicated the success in this “pioneer city of China's reform and opening-up”. He expressed optimism about Shenzhen's promising future, highlighting its immense potential. He said that being an honorary citizen of Shenzhen filled him with profound honor. Recognizing the weight of responsibility that came with having a hospital named after him, he vowed to nurture it like his own child and dedicate all his efforts to its advancement. He envisioned the hospital emerging as a global leader in neurosurgery.

Nurturing China’s future medical stars in 10 years

Prof. Madjid Samii outlined specific collaborative efforts and mentioned plans to bring foreign experts to Shenzhen for long-term services, providing local patients with access to international expertise. He also plans to select the best Chinese young physicians to  undergo training in Hanover, Germany, where they will learn advanced techniques in clinical practice, research, and teaching. This training program can help ensure long-term medical progress in China. Additionally, he expressed his desire to select excellent young physicians from across China to get trained in Shenzhen. Through this training, he aimed to

nurture China’s future medical stars within the next 5 to 10 years.

He shared that this aspiration was deeply personal to him, and he also hoped that Shenzhen Samii Medical Center would not only sustain but enhance its competitiveness over the next decade, aligning with top-tier institutions from advanced economies. He revealed that progress towards this goal was already in motion.

Furthermore, he mentioned that his team will hold a significant academic conference in China at the end of this year and he will invite renowned experts from various specialties to attend the conference.

He mentioned that he and his team will focus on serving patients in the field of neurosurgery, which comprises various sub-specialties such as brain tumor, brain stem, and vascular nerve surgeries. He noted that pediatric neurosurgery will also be a key focus, and he welcomes children with neurological disorders to come over for help. For some patients that have lost part of their body functions after suffering from neurological diseases, he said that he and his team would exert their utmost efforts to help them regain the lost functions.

Confident in his team’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities, Prof. Madjid Samii highlighted their unique expertise in addressing complex conditions within the field of neurosurgery.
