On the evening of April 28th, a distinguished foreign expert was warmly welcomed at the Shenzhen Samii Medical Center (The Fourth People's Hospital of Shenzhen). He joined our neurosurgery team on the front line of clinical care, and collaboratively, they performed a surgical procedure to remove a left vestibular schwannoma for a patient, helping her eliminate the threat posed by the tumor.
This distinguished foreign expert is a member of Prof. Madjid Samii’s team. He is highly esteemed in the field of neurosurgery, particularly for his expertise in cerebral hemorrhage. Throughout his more than two-decade medical career, he has published over 300 academic papers, with great contributions to the development of relevant guidelines and textbooks on multiple occasions. Guess who he is? He is Daniel Hänggi, an expert from Switzerland, who currently serves as the Director of Translational Neurosurgery at the International Neuroscience Institute (INI) in Hanover, Germany.
Prof. Daniel Hänggi
Since the operation of the Sino-German cooperative hospital, the team led by Prof. Madjid Samii has maintained close ties with us and regularly organizes telemedicine consultations with our neurosurgery team. Now, in order to better leverage the advantages of our hospital as an international medical institution, we are inviting foreign experts to the hospital to provide face-to-face services for patients. PART.01 After 3 years of seeking medical treatment, the root cause of hearing loss was finally identified The patient is a middle-aged woman. She began her long journey of seeking medical treatment three years ago after noticing hearing loss in her left ear. It wasn't until December of last year that she came to the Neurosurgery Department of our hospital. Following a series of specialized examinations, including MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), the root cause was finally identified—it turned out to be a left vestibular schwannoma. The area encircled in the red box indicates a left vestibular schwannoma. This type of tumor is a common intracranial one that may be accompanied by symptoms such as tinnitus, hearing loss, and balance disorders. According to the analysis of the imaging data, the patient's tumor has "grown" to approximately 3 centimeters in size. “I’ve heard that Professor BAO Yuhai, a renowned neurosurgery expert from Beijing Xuanwu Hospital, is now practicing at your hospital. Can I ask for his help to operate on me?" After receiving an affirmative response from the physician, the patient felt greatly relieved. PART.02 Two renowned experts collaboratively perform the surgery During the patient’s inpatient stay, Prof. Daniel Hänggi, upon learning about her condition, made the decision to join the neurosurgery team for collaborative treatment. On the morning of April 29th, Prof. Daniel Hänggi and the neurosurgery team conducted a thorough preoperative discussion and planning. With all preparations in place, they performed the surgery in the hospital's Hybrid Operating Room with the intraoperative MRI system. In the field of neurosurgery, performing a surgery tackling vestibular schwannoma is considered to be hellishly difficult. This is because the site where the tumor grows is extremely narrow. Additionally, it is densely packed with numerous tiny nerves and blood vessels. To ensure a successful surgery, the margin of error must be strictly controlled within millimeters. During the surgery, Prof. BAO Yuhai, the chief surgeon, drawing upon his extensive experience from over a thousand surgeries, skillfully navigated around the delicate and fragile nerves and blood vessels. Prof. Daniel Hänggi, standing by his side, provided great support, sharing his advanced experience gained from the International Neuroscience Institute (INI) in Hannover, Germany. With the combined efforts of these two renowned neurosurgery experts, the surgery was remarkably successful. The patient's intracranial tumor was completely removed, with every effort being made to preserve the patient's facial and acoustic nerves. PART.03 Looking to the Future, Exploring Possibilities "In the future, I will continue to provide medical and technological support and work closely with the neurosurgery team to help more Chinese patients in need." said Prof. Daniel Hänggi emotionally, deeply touching the neurosurgery medical staff present. As the only municipal public hospital in China jointly operated by Chinese and foreign partners, our hospital actively opens up more possibilities for patients' health and well-being by integrating diverse international perspectives and cutting-edge medical technologies. This Sino-German cooperative surgery has accumulated valuable experience for us to better serve patients. We will organize more Sino-foreign diagnosis and treatment activities to continuously provide patients with more advanced and higher-quality medical technologies and services.
Finally, we have an exciting news to share with everyone. The renowned neurosurgeon Prof. Madjid Samii also plans to come to our hospital next month to perform surgeries for patients. Information regarding the patient recruitment will be released soon. Please stay tuned for further updates.
