Since his two previous visits to the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (Shenzhen Samii Medical Center) in May and August this year, the world-renowned neurosurgeon Madjid Samii, the principal German operator of the hospital’s international collaboration, revisited on November 10. This visit marked another round of medical exchange and consultation activities, serving patients who had traveled from across China to seek expert care.

With passion, precision, and compassion

He safeguards health with original aspiration and honors his calling with passion

Professor Madjid Samii is a world-renowned neurosurgeon of German nationality, the Lifetime Honorary President of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), President of the International Neuroscience Institute (INI), Hannover, Germany, and founder of the International Innovative Medical Solutions (IIMS) in Hannover, Germany. He is the first foreign neurosurgeon ever granted a permanent license to practice medicine in China, and a recipient of the “Friendship Award” conferred by the Chinese government as well as the title of “Honorary Citizen of Shenzhen.” Prof. Samii enjoys an outstanding reputation in global neurosurgery and is widely known as the “Father of Skull Base Surgery.” Neurosurgery has been Prof. Samii’s lifelong pursuit. Over the years, he has committed himself to advancing neurosurgical education and has trained numerous neurosurgeons for China. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to neurosurgical research, diagnosis, and treatment in China, he was awarded the “Friendship Award” by the Chinese government.

As a globally recognized pioneer in neurosurgery, Professor Samii has become a “hallmark of excellence” for the neurosurgery of the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (SSMC), thanks to his exceptional expertise and unwavering passion for his work. Whenever news spreads that Professor Samii will be in Shenzhen to provide consultation and surgery services, appointment slots are quickly filled by patients eager to see medical care.

At 87 years old, this world-renowned neurosurgeon always carries a burning conviction in his heart:

“I often feel that I was born with a mission. The skills I have been given are meant to help those in need.”

Driven by this profound sense of mission, Professor Samii approaches each patient with unwavering dedication and regards the endeavor of neurosurgery as his life’s highest calling. To serve more patients, every visit he makes to Shenzhen is packed with surgeries and consultations back-to-back. Yet he has never shown the slightest sign of fatigue. On one occasion, he completed 12 highly complex surgeries in just five days—arriving in Shenzhen late at night and starting work early the next morning without resting or adjusting to the time difference. Undeterred by travel fatigue and jet lag, he maintained extraordinary efficiency and delivered top-quality care to his patients.

From November 10 to 12, Professor Samii saw dozens of patients, many of whom had traveled from regions such as Hong Kong, Fujian, Henan, Shandong, and Liaoning. Most of these patients were suffering from complex neurosurgical conditions and had previously sought treatment at multiple hospitals without being offered surgical solutions. Thanks to the collaboration between the Department of Neurosurgery at the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (SSMC) and Professor Samii, many of them were able to schedule surgical procedures immediately after their initial consultation.

Renowned experts and advanced equipment

Pushing neurosurgery of SSMC to the forefront of global standards

In addition to providing direct medical care during his visits to Shenzhen, Professor Samii has also played a vital role in the steady growth of the neurosurgery of the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (Shenzhen Samii Medical Center). Through his involvement, top-tier international medical resources have been introduced to China, offering new hope to countless patients. Professor Samii once said:

“This hospital carries my name, which means the responsibility for its development rests on my shoulders. My name has become its calling card, and I will treat this hospital as my own child, devoting all I have to support its growth. I hope it will one day become the world’s leading institution in the field of neurosurgery.”

Complementing Professor Samii’s exceptional medical ethics and surgical expertise, the Department of Neurosurgery at the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen is also at the forefront of the field in terms of medical performance. The department is equipped with a state-of-the-art Neuro-HOR, featuring advanced, high-precision technologies. This significantly enhances surgical quality and efficiency, while greatly reducing the risk of postoperative recurrence for patients. Often referred to as the “heart” of a modern hospital, the operating room is a hub of medical resources, and its infrastructure often reflects the overall standard of care at a medical institution. At the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (SSMC), the Neuro-HOR is outfitted with a full array of cutting-edge equipment, including neuronavigation systems and high-end surgical microscopes. These tools enable real-time intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging, neuronavigation, and neurophysiological monitoring, eliminating the need for repeated transfers during surgery and allowing for precise, complete tumor resection in one procedure. This setup embodies an integrated and comprehensive medical approach where “the patient remains stationary while the equipment moves”.
