Another Technological Leap! SSMC Successfully Held National-Level Basic Skills Training Course for Spinal Microsurgery

On March 28 to 29, the “Spinal Microsurgery Program”, sponsored by the National Health Commission and co-hosted by Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University and the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (Shenzhen Samii Medical Center), was successfully held at our hospital. Twenty-four neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons from across the country came together to discuss and exchange ideas about cutting-edge techniques and the latest advancements in spinal and spinal cord surgery.

The training program aimed to enhance standardized diagnosis and treatment in spinal microsurgery through professional training, further advancing the development of the field and cultivating the clinical talents. WANG Cheng, CPC Secretary of the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (Shenzhen Samii Medical Center), delivered remarks at the opening of the training course, extending heartfelt thanks to all the experts and trainees for their participation.

This training course invited renowned neurosurgeons, including Prof. JIAN Fengzeng, Prof. GUAN Jian, and Prof. WANG Kai from Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University; Prof. LU Yuntao from Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University; and Prof. ZHANG Qiusheng from the Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital. They delivered excellent theoretical lectures and gave detailed answers to trainees’ questions.

•Prof. WANG Kai from Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University delivered lectures on Clinical Evaluation and Surgical Treatment of Degenerative Lumbar Deformity and Minimally Invasive TLIF Techniques for the Lumbar Spine.

•Prof. LU Yuntao from Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University delivered a lecture on Vertebral Artery Variation Types and Surgical Management Techniques in Atlanto-Occipital Junction Malformations

•Prof. ZHANG Qiusheng from the Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital delivered a lecture on Removal of Intramedullary Cavernous Hemangioma via Ventral Approach through the Dorsal Root Entry Zone.


During the hands-on practical sessions, the course focused on key and challenging issues currently faced in spinal and spinal cord clinical field. Mentoring experts delivered in-depth and easy-to-understand lectures and answered questions focusing on clinical applied anatomy and surgical strategies and techniques. The trainees actively engaged in hands-on practice, performing actual surgical procedures to deepen their understanding and enhance their skills in spinal microscopic surgery.

The mentoring experts provided real-time guidance and feedback while also sharing practical experience to help trainees continuously improve their skills and proficiency during the hands-on sessions. Microsurgical techniques are crucial and essential in spinal and spinal cord surgery. The Basic Skills Training Program for Spinal Microsurgery, sponsored by the National Health Commission, adopts a combined approach of expert theoretical lectures and hands-on practice. It received praise from the trainees, who expressed that they will apply the skills they learned to their actual work, truly putting knowledge into practice to better serve their patients.

The successful completion of this training has further improved the microsurgical skills of clinical physicians in related specialties. With the joint efforts of experts and trainees, the field of spinal microsurgery is expected to achieve even more rapid and robust development, bringing higher-quality medical services to patients.
