Recently, the 2022 Annual Conference of the Medical Process Committee of Shenzhen Medical Association kicked off. Shenzhen Samii Medical Center (the Fourth People's Hospital of Shenzhen) (SSMC) is the chair organization of the Committee and WANG Cheng, CPC Secretary of SSMC, is the Chairman of the Committee. He is also the only person in SSMC that serves as the chairman of a committee under the Shenzhen Medical Association. The online conference attracted more than 200 participants including members of the Committee, logistics management personnel from hospitals and medical process design practitioners. Ethan Kholdebarin, Hospital Director of SSMC, MENG Jianmin, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, CAI Zhiming, Fellow of American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and President of Shenzhen Medical Association, were invited to deliver speeches.

In his opening remarks, Ethan Kholdebarin expressed SSMC's full support and best wishes for the work of the Committee; MENG Jianmin highlighted the special status and significance of the Committee as the only medical process committee under a medical association in China from the perspective of experts, and wished the annual conference a complete success; CAI Zhiming, as a superior leader of the Committee, recognized the achievements of the Committee in the past year and hoped that the Committee could achieve more success in medical-engineering innovation and cross-border integration in the future.

The conference was moderated by Dr. SONG Shuo, secretary of the Committee and a high-calibre talent recognized by the Shenzhen government. Seven big names gave presentations at the conference, including SHEN Chongde, Chairman of the Medical Process Committee of China Association of Medical Equipment; WANG Cheng, CPC Secretary of SSMC; XING Lihua, Director of Benyuan Medical Design Institute; CUI Hongzhi, Head of Department of Science and Technology of Shenzhen University; LIU Zhanpei, President of H.K. AOHUA Medical Industry Group Co.; JIANG Xuewu, CPC Secretary of Shenzhen Pingshan Women's and Children's Hospital; and CAI Zhiming, President of Shenzhen Medical Association. The participating experts discussed their expectations for and prospects of the construction of high-level modern hospitals.

SHEN Chongde, Chairman of the Medical Process Committee of China Association of Medical Equipment, gave a presentation titled Changes to and Thoughtson the Medical Process Design in Future Hospitals, in which he elaborated on the impact of COVID-19 prevention and control, development of smart hospitals, promotion of medical reforms, and humanistic appeal on the process design of future hospitals. He said that information technology is used in smart hospitals to achieve comprehensive perception of medical information, medical cooperation, smart processing, and personalized services, and ultimately achieve the goal of improving the service process, enhancing service efficiency, and elevating the refined management of hospitals. In the construction of future hospitals with smart hospitals as the core, it is necessary to take into account the demand for COVID-19 prevention and control, the demand for promotion of medical reforms and humanistic appeal at the same time, which have higher requirements for the medical process design at the beginning of construction.

WANG Cheng, Chairman of the Medical Process Committee of Shenzhen Medical Association and CPC Secretary of SSMC, introduced the philosophy and experience of SSMC in promoting the construction of green hospitals, the measures and achievements of SSMC in water-saving hospitals, green and low-carbon hospitals, energy saving and emission reduction to the participating experts from four aspects: green development, green construction, green planning and green concept with a presentation titled The Concept of New Development Leading the Construction of Green Hospitals. WANG Cheng stressed the green concept of SSMC, saying that "What is saved in the conservation of electricity and heat and in every process and project is not only money but also energy and resources".

The title of the presentation by XING Lihua, Director of Benyuan Medical Design Institute, is Design Trend of Future Hospitals. Mr. XING believes that "cross-border integration and design innovation" will be the trend of future hospital iteration, which will be characterized with hospital-city integration, functional diversification, spatial compounding, resource centralization, intelligent operation and maintenance, ecologicalization, and style diversification. In particular, Mr. XING said that ecological multidimensionality, multi-tiered industry, recombined transportation, service pluralism, intelligent interconnection, resource sharing, and resilience and flexibility will be essential components of future hospitals.

CUI Hongzhi, Head of Department of Science and Technology of Shenzhen University, introduced the latest research progress of energy conservation and energy storage technology on buildings at home and abroad with a presentation titled Preliminary Study on Low Carbon and Low Energy Consumption Technology in Medical Buildings, and reported on his team’s achievements in creating light, green and low-carbon concrete with high-intensityand low thermal conductivity, as well as energy storage concrete with high energy storage density and fast thermal response rate. He particularly introduced the importance of the phase change cold storage technology in night air-conditioning with high economic benefit and low operation energy consumption for achieving green, low carbon, carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets.

In his presentation titled High-performance Hospital Architecture Design Assists High-quality Hospital Development, Mr. LIU Zhanpei, President of H.K. AOHUA Medical Industry Group Co., focused on the construction of a healthy China and excellent hospitals, studied and judged the trend of the future development, and comprehensively interpreted the connotation of high-quality development in the new stage of development of modern hospitals in the 14th Five-year Plan. He shared his company’s hospital design concept and achievements accumulated from practice over the past 25 years, presented the knowledge system of the construction of excellent hospitals and the hot spots of cutting-edge design and innovation, and looked forward to the construction of excellent hospitals and a new journey of high-quality development of public hospitals in the new era.

JIANG Xuewu, CPC Secretary of Shenzhen Pingshan Women's and Children's Hospital, analyzed the gap between the number of ICU beds in Chinese hospitals and that in word-class foreign hospitals with a presentation titled Medical Process Design - Opportunities and Challenges. He shared his take on how new hospitals and reconstructed ones should control the number of beds, shift the focus to women and children, reduce the land area, increase the floor area, intensively build reproductive centers and centers for minimally invasive surgeries, and build adequate conference rooms in the post-epidemic era. Mr. JIANG believes that in the medical process design of new and reconstructed hospitals, designers should be more professional, knowledgeable and responsible, and play a greater role in adapting to, influencing, and even educating the project owners.

CAI Zhiming, President of Shenzhen Medical Association, made a presentation titled Introducing Cutting-edge Technologies in Life Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Public Health to Help the Construction of High-level Hospitals in China. President CAI's presentation started with three major challenges currently faced in the field of human medicine, expounded the significance of national implementation of the high-level hospital development, and introduced cutting-edge technology hotspots in life sciences, clinical medicine and public health. President CAI took BGI Hospital, in which he is presiding over the establishment of a new system and mechanism, as an example to elaborate on the concept of the medical process design of BGI Hospital, and the significance of building modern hospitals with cutting-edge technologies as a starting point, realizing high-quality development, and adhering to the prospect of "focusing on the public's life and health".

Finally, the five-hour conference was successfully concluded in a lively discussion between speakers and participating experts. The participating experts believe that this conference focuses on the construction of excellent hospitals and future hospitals, provides a bridge and resource sharing platform between hospitals and the medical process design industry, and promotes academic exchange and progress in the industry. We hope that next year, the Medical Process Committee will further expand the team, actively include excellent talents in the relevant fields of medical process, realize multidisciplinary integration including medical treatment, nursing, control of nosocomial infections, design, management, etc., and jointly provide services for hospital construction through cooperation from cross-border talents.
