From March 2nd to March 4th, a medical engagement was held at the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (Shenzhen Samii Medical Center). The world-renowned neurosurgeon Prof. Madjid Samii and his team collaborated with leading staff from major hospitals in Shenzhen to conduct surgical teaching, deliver expert lectures, and engage in various academic activities, while also offering clinical services to many patients. Broaden Academic Horizons Build Multidisciplinary Development Together “When this medical center was first established, the Shenzhen municipal government hoped that I could bring the highest standard of medical services here. They honored me as an Honorary Citizen of Shenzhen and named the medical center after me. This is a great honor, but it also comes with great responsibility.” In his speech at this medical engagement, Prof. Madjid Samii explained the original motivation for organizing the medical engagement. He emphasized that since the goal is to achieve the highest standard of medical services, every department in the general hospital must reach the most outstanding standard. “I feel very honored to bring several world-leading professors here to share their expertise and skills with physicians in Shenzhen,” said Prof. Madjid Samii. Prof. Madjid Samii delivered a speech at the medical engagement This event covers multiple medical specialties beyond neurosurgery. Prof. Madjid Samii also brought two international medical experts: Otolaryngologist Prof. Thomas Lenarz and general surgery specialist Prof. Thomas Reinartz. Prof. Moritz Schmelzle engaged in exchanges with physicians from various hospitals in Shenzhen. Prof. Thomas Lenarz is a distinguished otolaryngologist with an impressive 42 years of experience. He is currently based at the Department of Otolaryngology of Hannover Medical School Hospital in Germany. He ever served as the Head of Otology, Audiology, and Neuro-otology at the University of Heidelberg and is also the founder of the Hannover Hearing Center. Prof. Moritz Schmelzle is a renowned expert in abdominal tumor and transplant surgery, with specialized expertise in laparoscopic and robotic techniques. In addition to his clinical work, he is also deeply engaged in scientific research, with a focus on cell transplantation and organ repair. Prof. Madjid Samii believed that the visit of these two experts to Shenzhen for interdisciplinary exchanges and collaboration will not only broaden the academic horizons of Shenzhen’s medical community but also lay a strong foundation for the multidisciplinary development of the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen, ultimately bringing greater benefits to patients in Shenzhen and the wider Greater Bay Area. Prof. Madjid Samii conducted live surgical teaching. Visiting Experts: “I am very pleased to contribute to the care of patients in China.” Led by Prof. Madjid Samii, Prof. Thomas Lenarz and Prof. Moritz Schmelzle engaged in in-depth discussions with the expert teams from the E.N.T. Department and the General Surgery Department of the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen (SSMC), as well as specialists from related fields in major hospitals in Shenzhen. They held multiple academic exchange activities, where participants discussed key issues in their respective fields and jointly shared the latest research findings and clinical experience. Prof. Thomas Lenarz said: “With the progress of neuroscience-related projects at SSMC, there is tremendous potential to establish a world-class hearing center here. We can leverage extensive expertise and collaborate with industries offering technical treatment solutions, as well as biotechnology companies, to introduce biotherapy into this field—serving not only Shenzhen but all of China. Prof. Madjid Samii and I are exploring the possibility of restoring hearing through the implantation of central auditory implants. We are committed to bringing these advancements here and working tirelessly to achieve this goal.” Prof. Thomas Lenarz communicated with patients in the inpatient department. Prof. Moritz Schmelzle said, “I am very honored to have the opportunity to work alongside the hospital staff and participate in ward rounds. The nursing staff here are very active and highly skilled. SSMC is a modern hospital and is expected to become an internationally top-tier medical center in a very short time. In the future, the hospital will provide all the necessary technical support, such as robotic surgery and artificial intelligence, to further improve medical services. I have been continuously studying complex tumor surgeries, including esophageal, gastric, liver, and pancreatic cancers, as well as organ transplantation surgeries. I am very pleased to contribute my efforts to the patients at SSMC and to provide knowledge and professional skills training for the energetic and young abdominal surgery team here in Shenzhen.” Aiming to Build an Outstanding General Hospital Within 5 to 10 Years “We must have a broad international vision and understand how healthcare systems operate in different countries. When doctors at all levels share knowledge and learn from each other, progress follows. As an Honorary Citizen of Shenzhen, I say this: if you can offer everything I need to fuel development, I will come.” Prof. Madjid Samii firmly believed that only by bringing in more top experts and cultivating more outstanding local doctors can we truly meet patients’ medical needs. He hoped that within the next 5 to 10 years, beyond strengthening neurosurgery, the Fourth People’s Hospital of Shenzhen will reach top-tier standards across multiple specialties, becoming a general hospital that excels in all fields of medicine.
